Gravity Forms 2.7 includes some major changes under the hood that will have a big impact on how third-party developers interact with Gravity Forms. If you’re a developer, you’ll now be able to create snappy user interfaces in the admin area and design beautiful forms for the front end.

Read on to find out more about some of the stand out 2.7 features that will significantly benefit your experience when building on Gravity Forms…

Build UIs with Our New NPM Packages

In 2.7, we started using React to build user interfaces in the WordPress dashboard. React lets us build multi-screen interfaces, such as the new Setup Wizard and Template Library, that look good and run quickly and smoothly for users.

These interfaces are built from reusable React components that we can quickly assemble into a variety of user interfaces. To empower developers to build your own admin user interfaces to match Gravity Forms, we have published our UI components as npm packages.

Here’s a list of useful links to help you get started…

We have both React and HTML versions of our component libraries, so any developer can use the npm packages to build new UIs, with or without React, without being tied to a particular version of Gravity Forms.

Build Form Themes with our New Theme Framework

Gravity Forms users will notice the new Orbital theme in the form block settings. The Orbital theme is just the tip of the form theme iceberg: we have built an entire Theme Framework that will empower developers to build form themes in a wide variety of ways.

The Theme Framework includes a CSS API, which is a collection of CSS custom properties that are used to define how a form looks in the Orbital theme. You can define your own values for these custom properties to change a form’s appearance.

Add-Ons that add fields and other elements to forms can also define custom properties for their front-end elements so that they can integrate with the Theme Framework.

We are just getting started on the Theme Framework, and we have a lot of plans to expand it in the future to make it easier for developers to build your own themes. As WordPress’s theme.json and Full Site Editing become more standardized, we will also integrate with theme.json so that forms will automatically use WordPress theme styles.

These features are new, and we will continue to build on them in future versions. We are working on thorough documentation, which will be available soon!
